Talking Points

This is not an exhaustive list, nor should you feel obligated to cover everything on the list.  It is a tool for volunteers who might need ideas for what to talk about when you attend a workplace campaign kickoff.

·        If you have the host company show the video first, your job will be easier because the employees will have familiarity with our mission.

·        Keep it brief!  One of your primary purposes for speaking is to thank the employees for their past support, if applicable; and to thank the company for allowing you to come in and have the opportunity to offer payroll deductions.  Mention how small amounts regularly given add up to large dollars of support when so many are allowed to participate.

·        Reiterate something that is personal to you from the video, or your personal experience with one of the partner agencies, if applicable.

·        Refer to the brochure and mention the work of some of our partner agencies.  Audience participation is also helpful, so ask them for a show of hands if they have volunteered with one of the agencies.  Or ask if they have a friend or relative who receives services from one of the agencies.  This helps make it more personal.

·        Mention that the agencies are held to a high standard of accountability.  Our Budget Committee carefully reviews and evaluates each Program proposal and allocates our resources based on the strength of the agency and the needs they are meeting.

·        At some point, explain that a “fair share” donation is one hour’s pay per month.  Speak in terms of giving up a hamburger, or a lunch out each month.
